Shantae and the Pirate's Curse

The fabled art of 'let's play' is nigh tangible here. Got an LP you're just itching to share? Or maybe you just want to make snarky comments about someone's bad playing? That kind of thing goes here!

I am super incredibly hyped for this. I've heard that this game's main mechanic isn't like Shantae's signature magical dances, so I'll be curious to see how it works.

Indeed. I've played the 3DS downloadable version. It seems like the console/PC port is touched up alot with the particle effects, I'd have to double check though I'm sensing some significant differences in the shop. But I haven't played this game in a while. I'll double check it and let you know.

Oh gee. I sure have forgotten how fanservice-y this game is, and this is just the beginning. I won't spoil anything but like Speedless I am also pretty hyped for Iso.

[Edit] I just realized what was bothering me about this game series. And it's that Shantae's portrait art style changes every game. RIP waist scarf.

It's just kinda jarring when I realize how, err rounded, this art style is especially compared to the upcoming game which is more big-headed almost chibified.

Hey guys! I've got this weird bug with the game! When I go into the Inventory, without pressing any buttons the cursor is continually going down, like I held a direction on the N64 joystick when starting that system, except it's just the Inventory screen that's doing this and the game controls fine otherwise. Anyone know what's going on?

EDIT: Apparently it's my controller. I tried it again without my controller plugged in, and the menu worked fine.

So...crap, I guess I'm not playing this with a controller :tsad2:. Which sucks, since keyboards are shit for action games.

Jolpe is correct. If you want to you can play platformers with the keyboard. I remember playing most of my early roms with the keyboard.
The days of playing E.V.O the search for Eden with the keyboard as a clueless kid ahh memories.

As with learning any new controller it would be stiff and awkward. So I don't blame you for not wanting to change. My cheapest solid suggestion would be to find an X-box 360 controller (if you are ok with the D-pad) or look into something else online.

An Xbox controller at most would run you 20-25$

This is very highly dependent on the keyboard you're using. My keyboard, for example, has very bad ghosting issues so it's nearly impossible to use it for something like a platformer. I've tried it with SMBX before when my controller was at a friend's house and I could run and move or move and jump but not run+jump+move.

Fair point. But a USB keyboard would be cheaper than a controller.

Started playing after Iso and am now more than halfway through. The music in this game is so damn good!
Also, the OST is pay what you want, so that's neat.

I use to be very reluctant to use a keyboard for any game, it just felt so unnatural. Like Earth said it might be because I grew up with controllers on retro consoles and stuff. But over time I got used to it. With a decent keyboard most games are completely fine to play. At the same time there are some games that I just can't imagine using a keyboard with, like Dustforce DX. It's weird

Unless it's a game like Terraria I can't play any platformer worth a damn with a keyboard. This is largely due to the fact that my keyboard is crap and has ghosting issues but quite a bit of it is also due to the fact that platformers just don't feel right on anything but a controller to me.

That is weird, since Dustforce was designed to be played with a keyboard. I've always played it using a keyboard and it works absolutely perfectly. Couldn't finish the game, but that's because I'm a scrub, not because of the controls.
In any case, I was never a console kid. The only consoles I've owned were the Gameboy, Gameboy Advance and Nintendo DS. So, I'm pretty comfortable with mouse and keyboard and often find it pretty difficult to switch to controller. For example, I started playing Super Meat Boy with the keyboard and just couldn't play it with the controller at all. And I much prefer Bleed's M+K controls to the gamepad ones. Both work well, but I'm rubbish at aiming with the right stick while moving around since you'd have to move the stick even if the enemy is stationary.
That said, I played Shantae with a controller and it definitely works far better than the keyboard controls. The latter are serviceable, but they're nothing to write home about.

Yeah I know Dustforce is supposed to be way better when played with a keyboard and many of the top players and speedrunners also use keyboard. I had issues with controller with it in the beginning since it is so sensitive with inputs its hard to explain but I just got good with a controller and cant really switch with it.

Super Meat Boy on the other hand is absolutely amazing with controller, one of the best and tightest controls in a platforming game that is crazy you cant use a controller with it. Everybody has their own preferences though its more of an issue of just use what you are comfortable with I guess

It's interesting to note that, as opposed to Dustforce, SMB was specifically made to be played using a controller.

Yeah, the game even explicitly tells you "Hey, you should play with a gamepad."
I don't really get how it's better with a gamepad, though. As far as I know, movement is entirely digital and there's no difference between pressing the stick just a little and pressing it all the way. The only way to go faster is by pressing the Run button.
So, how does the game actually benefit from controller input?

Back on topic, man, this part is pretty neat. And three really good tracks (Rave in the Grave, The Nightmare Woods, Rottytops) in quick succession. Also, there's an achievement for going through the entire thing without getting hit even once. It's pretty brutal.

The escort section seemed pretty long for what it was. Still a great episode and that would be tough to do all in one shot without getting hit. Most everything seemed fair from a blind perspective anyway. It was hard for me to hear the music as well but it seemed pretty neat

Indeed Nixitur, the fan service surges fiercely in this segment. Such frisky little dog-garbed folk. Personally I'm really disappointed that Bolo didn't get captured and mistaken as a princess as well.

Trivia time! The snake charmer, Space Princess get-up that Shantae and the gang have is actually the alternate costume from Risky's Revenge. In Risky's Revenge there was a promo/DLC costume called Magic Mode. It gave you double magic, but because of the lack of pants Shantae took more damage as well.

This Segment was pretty silly. Although getting caught by the guards before getting the checkpoint kinda sucks. At the same time, they went to all the effort to bring back the old costume and you can't even switch to it after this segment.
I never really found the kick to be all that useful. Jumping and using the upgraded gun in the air in the air usually felt more effective.
And if you think about it. why would you want to attack with Shantae's legs anyways, she is already fighting with the strong fiber in the human(genie) body...her hair...get it cause Keratin is the strongest fiber...nevermind.

If you remember the two pale blondes we met on Silva island I don't believe the game ever tells us their names but they are Twitch and Vinegar (Short one with glasses and pigtails being Twitch and the Tall one being Vinegar)

another piece of trivia. Hoisting up the lamp will draw loose collectibles towards you collecting them instantly.

Opinion. I really didn't care for how fanservice-y this game is at times. I like that it is really silly and cartoony but they lay the fanservice a bit thick in this one.

Yeah, the fanservice comes really out of nowhere in this section. It's a bit silly. It does lead to a pretty funny conversation later on, though.
Zummorr wrote:another piece of trivia. Hoisting up the lamp will draw loose collectibles towards you collecting them instantly.

Neat, I never knew that, even though I played the game to completion.

Also, yay, Iso found the gold-farming spot. The temple is a bit of a maze, so if you want to get back to that spot, here's how to from the main room with the switch, the previously-locked doors and the Cacklebat cage.
Enter the Black Door
Enter the Orange Door
Enter the Purple Door

Well I meant this game is more fanservice-y in general. It's usually played for laughs, but I think it's in pretty poor taste when turning on the 3-D on the 3DS emphasizes the conversation portrait's *Ahem* upper body fat.

Game is still really good though.

Another piece of trivia. If you look closely at Shantae's sprite when she is using any of the pirate items (not the flare). You will notice that she is wearing a skull bandanna on her head and a buckle on her thigh.

Yeah, I noticed the bandana as well. It doesn't really make sense, given that Shantae never wears them normally. However, as can be seen later, there's quite a few portrait images of Shantae wearing that outfit. So, I'm wondering if those sprites are the remains of an earlier spritesheet where Shantae did actually wear the pirate's outfit. Just speculation, but it does seem kinda odd.

I think early on they probably wanted additional costumes, pirate and dancer, but decided against it. If you look at the cover art for the game she does wear the pirate bandanna. Maybe early on they wanted shantae to run around in the pirate outfit the whole game but decided against it and wanted to reuse as much of the old sprite-work as they could so they could focus on making new stuff.
But I think that they were purposely left in on the justification that they are pretty small and stylistically still fit what she was doing

I'm going to break the unspoken taboo about double posting.

During your fight with Squid baron 2.0, you had trouble healing. You can heal in boss fights, the reason you were getting an error was because you were in the air. No self respecting half human would eat in the air, you just can't.

I just noticed that unlike the other pirate weapons the sword pogo doesn't change shantae's sprite to wear a bandanna.

Just so you know, Shantae is still half-human, it's just that her other half is also human.

It's not really an issue so long as you're not posting multiple times in a short period of time. (Though there are exceptions to that as well such as when I posted several times in a row in the general chat but that was relevant at that point in time since I was playing into a joke.)

Indeed. I understand that the general rule is to be considerate, not spammy, and to exercise common sense.

in the last episode the stout woman who told us about Magic Jams in the last game referred to Shantae's modified design.

See for yourself the magic of time Image
In fact the early beta designs of Shantae basically are uncannily similar certain disney princess.Image

Since I'm on the topic of designs. Bolo seems to have the Oban-Star Racing, Final Fantasy Tactics, or Voldemorte problem of lacking a nose. This wouldn't be that problematic except now we have to wonder how exactly his glasses stay on face.

Yeah, I think the game could use a bit less fanservice, but hopefully we're past the worst of it.

My first thought on seeing Mud Bog Island was "didn't we already do the horror level?", but I kinda liked this take on the theme. Still, if Shantae can boost her attack power by washing her hair, shouldn't it drop when she uses said hair on goo monsters?

Does anything happen if you jump when the speed booster charges up (before pressing "attack")?

I'm putting this here so you see it Iso. the jump at 0:56 in your video, you need to get better at platformers you can make that jump. You don't have to go back there if you don't want to. But you needed to jump from the edge of the lower platform in order to make it.

@Ozzy. jumping before charging the speed booster only delays the charge-up. At the same time if you continue to run in the same direction, you will not get a second charge up.

Um, no no, I'm talking about two of the girls in the spoilered comic page (their names are Shiho (girl talking about wearing warming pads) and Rin (girl with magic sword))

(And no, it's not a Touhou doujinshi. It's from a manga called Jitsu Wa Watashi Wa. Which I recently got into. Sorry for the confusion)

(Also also, the ghost girl with the butterflies and bottomless stomach is named Yuyuko. Not Youko. It's funny, cause that threw me off for a second, since there's a girl named Youko in JwWw)

Warning: Noted tendency to go from the Queen of Lewd to the Queen of Shrews seemingly at random. If this happens, explain that you meant nothing by it, and she'll quickly apologize

Are you sure they aren't cosplaying as Youmu and Yuyuko in that pic...cause like the one on the right has a similar hat to Yuyuko, complete with the silly squiggly symbol. And the one on the left has a ribbon around her chest like Youmu.

having trouble viewing the comic if it is under the image or something.

I...wha...? What are you going on about now?

...I...I've gotta be missing something here :tconfused: ...But, well, no, look here, okay: http://mangasaurus.com/manga/4377/jitsu-wa-watashi-wa? This is the manga that the pic was from.

Wow, you're lame :theart: :tstick2:! I'm of the mind that this game, and all games, could use more fanservice. But then, I'm me :tstick2: :theart:!

You want to keep buying shampoo every time you fight one of those guys? Be my guest if so! As for me, I'm not usually one for "energy drain" like stuffs in games.

And yeah, it seems like jumping is a hindrance when charging the boots :undecided:
